| Introduction |
"The Gaspar Cassado International Competition" is named after one of the greatest cellists in the 20th century, Gaspar Cassado (1897-1966). To find and bring up exellent young musicians, the 1st competition was founded in 1969 by the late Chieko Hara (1914-2001), Cassado's wife and also a Japanese pianist, with the cooperation of the Florence government, Italy after Cassado's death. However, to our great regret, the lack of successor led the competition to an end after the 10th competition was held in 1990.
"Violoncello Concert Community", a non-profit organization established by Hachioji citizens, took over the wishes of Chieko Hara who spent the last period of her life in this Tama district, and the competition was revived by the organizing committee.
As you know, music festivals and competitions are held in all parts of Japan, but we've never seen any domestic violoncello competition at an international level. Moreover, we have no doubt that even in the world this kind of competition is extremely rare and precious.
"The Gaspar Cassado International Violoncello Competition in Hachioji" not only aims to produce a number of excellent musicians, but also devote to tring people's heart to heart together in the world through music and developing an affluent society.
