The Gaspar Cassado International Violoncello Competition Organizing Committee will host the Competition, which will be held in Hachioji City, Tokyo, from November 27 to December 6, 2009.
 
Organization
The Organizing Committee will assign a Secretariat who will be responsible for the planning and running of the Competition. A Committee of Experts and a Jury will be organized each time the Competition is held.
The Committee of Experts will be comprised of prominent Japanese musicians. Likewise, the Jury will be comprised of musicians in Japan and abroad. Names of juries in charge of the screening will be kept confidential.
 
 
 
Ⅱ.  Application
 
Eligibility
The Competition is open to cellists of all nationalities born after 1981.
 
Application Method
All applicants are asked to complete the official application form and send it to the Secretariat in addition to the documents and DVD/ CD listed below, no later than June 15th, 2009.

a) A copy of your family register, birth certificate or other official document certifying the applicant's birth date. (Copy of passport is acceptable)

b) Two recent photographs in color (9 x 12cm maximum)

c) A recorded DVD or CD of the applicant's performance of two works selected from 1 - 3 below, one of which must include 1.


1: One of the listed following

  Johan Sebastian Bach: Prelude and Sarabande from the Suite
- No.4 E flat major
- No.5 C minor
- No.6 D major

2: Joseph Haydn: 1st movement from concerto in D major Hob.VⅡb/2
(Cadenza: Contestant is free to choice)

3: Franz Schubert: 1st movement (Allegro moderato) from the Sonata Arpeggione

* Recordings of more than a year prior to June 15th, 2009 will not be accepted.


e) A letter from a creditable musician or a cello expert to verify that the performance recorded on the CD has been properly executed by the applicant. (This letter is not necessary if the performance is recorded on DVD.)
 
Application Deadline
Applications must be sent to the Secretariat by June 15th, 2009.
Applications received after the closing date will not be considered except under special circumstances as deemed appropriate by the Organizing Committee.
The Organizing Committee will set up the Committee of Experts to screen and determine the final result of the application. All applicants will be informed of their acceptance or rejection notification before the end of June 2009.

Accepted applicants must remit an entry fee of 20,000 JPY (Japanese Yen) to the bank account shown below by September 15th, 2009.

Succesful submission of the entry fee will conclude the application procedure and honor the accepted applicant's entrance into the Competition and his/her understanding the conditions stated in this brochure.
* Participants are responsible for any bank charges.
* The entry fee will not be returned under any circumstances.
 
Travel and Accommodation
Travel expenses to and from Hachioji are solely responsible by the contestants. However, non-Japanese contestants who are non-residents in Japan will be provided with financial aid for international transportation. Contestants from Asian regions will be provided either USD500 or economy-class round trip airfare from the nearest international airport in the residing country (whichever is less). Contestants from other regions will be provided USD1,000. Calculation of financial aid will differ based on the country.

Contestants may stay at a dormitory (with breakfast) without charge that will be arranged by the Organizer. Accommodation and travel expenses for the accompanist must be paid for by the contestant. The dormitory option will be offered to contestants only. Contestants may choose to stay at a hotel at their own expense after indicating so on the application form.

All contestants must arrive in Hachioji and report in person to the Secretariat in time for the drawing to decide the order of appearance in the Competition, which is scheduled for November 26, 2009. Failure to report in by the time specified above will result in disqualification from the Competition.
 
Practice and Rehearsals
Any contestant who does not bring his/her own accompanist will be provided with an official accompanist by the Organizing Committee and will have an opportunity to rehearse with the assigned accompanist, free of charge, for a ninety-minute session before each stage.

Each finalist will be given one or two appointments to rehearse with the orchestra before the Final Stage.
Schedule and duration of the dress rehearsal on the final stage day will be determined by the Conductor.
 
Performance
The Organizing Committee will decide the order of appearance by draw on the day before the first stage.
On the day of appearance, each contestant must arrive at the Secretariat office located in the concert hall by the specified time. However, should the contestant be tardy for his/her appearance through unavoidable circumstances, the Organizing Committee may allow the latecomer to perform, depending on a progress of the Competition.

Contestants can play from a score; the selected score will influence the jury's decision.

All stages of the Competition will be open to public.
 
Performing Rights
The Organizing Committee has the right to televise, broadcast, film, videotape, CD or photograph any performance in the Competition without monetary compensation. As well, the Organizer has the right to produce and distribute recordings of any performance, either in part or whole, in the Competition without limit nor payment.
 
Judgment
Judgment will be comprised of 9 jury members of international prominence.
The jury members must report if any contestant(s) at the Judging Committee has been his/her own students for more than three months within the past two years.
All decisions made by the Jury will be final and will not be subject to any appeal.

Contestants must not communicate with the jury members any time after the first stage has started until the Competition is finished. Any contestant who fails to comply with this rule will be disqualified and, equally, should jury members communicate with a contestant, his/her status in the Competition will be compromised.

In the case of a tie, the amount of the prize and that of the following prize in ranking, will be added up and equally shared.
Taxes will be deducted from all awards accordingly to Japanese tax laws.

Additional awards may be offered by corporations and individuals that stand agreeable with the aims of the Competition.
 
Contract of Concert
The First Prizewinner will be paid to perform a recital in Japan until the next competition is held.
The Organizing Committee will arrange the initial concert to be held in Japan, at which the First Prizewinner will perform.
The Organizing Committee will arrange the concert within six months while consulting with the First Prizewinner.

If the First Prizewinner chooses to appear in other competitions, he/she is required to notify the Organizing Committee immediately.
 
CD Release
The Organizing Committee will release a live-recording Competition CD.


This brochure is based on the Rules of "The 2nd Gaspar Cassado International Violoncello Competition" and any disputes regarding the rules and conditions contained in this brochure will be settled according to the Japanese text of the aforesaid rules and the Japanese laws.
